What’s the Difference between ADD and ADHD?

The terms ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) are often used interchangeably. They have most of the same characteristics. The only difference is that children with ADD do not fidget like children with ADHD do. The ‘hyperactivity’ component causes children with ADHD to be more energetic. Children with ADD are not always diagnosed early on because their inattentiveness is considered daydreaming. However, with ADD testing, parents can get the answers they need to help their children overcome challenges in their lives.

Symptoms of attention deficit disorders include:

  • Short Attention Span
  • Difficulty Focusing or Following Directions
  • Impulsive Actions
  • Defiant Behavior (Typically the result of boredom or not being able to communicate)
  • Fidgeting Body Movements (ADHD but not ADD)
  • Distracted Thinking
  • Difficulties in Social Settings
  • Avoiding Tasks That Take Focus or a Long Stretch of Time
  • Appearing Like They Are Not Listening
  • Difficulty Staying Organized or On-Task
