Is Your Child Ready for Kindergarten?

Starting kindergarten is a big milestone in a child’s life—but not all children develop at the same pace, and some may benefit from additional support before or during this transition. Developmental evaluations can provide valuable insight into a child’s readiness for school and help identify early learning, behavioral, social, or emotional concerns.

These assessments look at key areas critical for kindergarten success, including:

  • Cognitive development (early problem-solving, attention, memory)
  • Language skills (understanding and expressing ideas)
  • Motor skills (coordination, fine motor control for writing)
  • Social-emotional development (ability to manage emotions, follow routines, and interact with peers)
  • Behavior Regulation (the ability to listen and follow instructions, regulate their body movements, attend to a task)
  • Pre-academic skills (basic number and letter recognition, early literacy skills)

For some children—especially those with speech delays, attention difficulties, sensory sensitivities, or developmental delays—early testing can uncover challenges that may not be obvious yet in a classroom setting. By identifying these needs early, families can pursue appropriate early intervention services, pre-K or developmental kindergarten programs, or individualized support plans (such as an IEP) before or shortly after their entry into school.

Early identification leads to early support—and that can make a significant difference in a child’s confidence, classroom experience, and long-term learning path.
